As far as user-friendliness goes, you can never be too obvious. Buttons that are a little too big are better than buttons that are a little too small. Links that look very linky (blue and underlined) are just fine, from a usability perspective. A good test to put your pages through is to squint at them and see what things seem like. Do your buttons stand out enough? Do your ads look like ads and the photos in your articles look like photos in your articles? Are the important things prominent? Do the less important things fade away as you squint? Squinting is a good way to check what’s obvious and what’s not obvious on your site. Be sure to make the right things obvious. Where are you located? When are you open? How much does it cost? What is your phone number?
