so many cars

there’s so many cars
they all move so fast
and none will let the other past

you have to take
you have to grab
the more you give the less you have

but there’s so much peace
and so much love
that no one needs to push & shove

all-you-can-eat buffets
and free refills galore
the world’s an ocean and we’re at the shore

we’re in the same boat
we’re on the same bus
“We have identified the enemy and He is Us.”

so get out if you want
the lifeboat’s right there
but what makes you think that you’ll float anywhere?

the big boat’s the life boat
the small one’s a raft
if you try to leave, everyone will just laugh

because there’s life right here
there’s time to pass
and the more you share, the more you have

so no more hate
and much less anger
because every Friend was once a Stranger

is that true?
definitely.
hey, if you were my soulmate, where would you be?

souls can be friendly
and friends even stranger
but you all oughta know that we’re all gonna stay here

ain’t goin’ nowhere
nowhere real soon
so just plop down on the porch and look up at the moon

the moon’s for all
and for all it’s free
because there’s just no difference between you and me

a few lines on the ground
some blood in our hearts
that’s all that’s keeping any of us apart

*

there’s so many cars
they all move so fast
lucky there’s one who lets other ones past

you might be
1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th
but do you win by going east, west, south or north?

it’s hard to tell
the goal’s not far nor near
and whenever we get there, ‘there’ looks like here

this needn’t frustrate
or make us upset
I feel like we’ve won without placing a bet

we’ve been given a vessel
and a land with no map
potential unlimited and resources to tap

we can hop, skip or jump
stop, turn or veer
to take ourselves from any ‘there’ to here

on our way to the moon
I’m sure we will think
that with love as our glue our ship wouldn’t sink

it wouldn’t fail
pause or falter
but like a stranger’s smile, love does seem to alter

it surprises, confuses
and boggles the mind
why anyone would not want to be kind

but why should love startle?
why shouldn’t I smile?
the glue here is real but we’re all in denial

in the dark with a light
beaming from head down to toe
like a seed in the ground that knows which way to grow

I will go out on a limb
I will take a big chance
I will ask that girl if she wants to dance

she might say ‘no’
she might say ‘yes’
It’s better not to stand and guess.

so I will love my neighbor
and her neighbor too
which of course might be me, but it might be you.
