When things don’t seem to fit

In an interview with Ray Dalio, a very successful hedge fund manager, the interviewer asked Ray what the keys to his success were and Ray mentioned a couple of things and then mentioned transcendental meditation. The interviewer didn’t pursue that line of the conversation, even though it was clearly important to Ray, and perhaps unique in the financial world. It seemed like the interviewer didn’t pursue that thread of the conversation because it didn’t seem to fit. If Ray had mentioned a business book, I’m sure they would have kept talking about that. But they were talking about money and Ray started to talk about meditation.

When things don’t seem to fit, you can ignore them and assume they really don’t fit, or you can embrace them, and see how they fit.
