I watched a video of poker pro Daniel Negreanu playing a hand where he made an initial bet and said, “Sure, I don’t know what I have yet, let’s see a flop.” In Texas hold ‘em, each player is dealt 2 hole cards and then the flop comes, which is 3 more communal cards, and finally 2 more communal cards come later. So when he said this, he had seen only 2 out of the 7 cards he could make his 5-card hand with. Daniel knew that once he had seen 5 of the 7 cards, he’d know where he stood better than when he only saw 2 of the 7 cards.
When you’re making a decision, don’t decide not to play too early. Gather as much information as you can before you decide to carry on or call it quits.
