One of our sprinkler pipes busted and I called a plumber to see if he could fix it. He was very friendly and told me I might be able to fix it myself—as if I were calling a chef to see if she could come over and cut my carrots for me. He proceeded: “You just need a 4” nipple, schedule 80 PVC piping, an expansion coupler, primer, and some glue.” And, of course, some pipe cutters. Of course. I quickly agreed to pay him to do it. I don’t mind getting my hands dirty, but this didn’t seem worth my time. I brush my teeth, but I’m no dentist. I know what my job is, and I’m not a plumber. It would be a terrible waste of time and talent for everyone to try to do everything. What is the job that you’re going to do?
