Out of sight, out of mind. In sight, in mind.

“Out of sight, out of mind,” is a saying, and that’s probably why we wait close to the busy shop clerk who promises to help us soon.

“In sight, in mind,” should also be a saying. When there’s a pile of dirty dishes in the sink, my mind registers that fact every time I walk by the sink, even if I’ve already decided to deal with the dishes later. That mind registration is somewhat taxing. To feel it, leave one of your kitchen drawers open slightly. To really feel it, open up all of your kitchen cabinets, and then try to make a sandwich in peace. It’s hard. In sight, in mind. If you don’t want it in your mind, get it out of your sight.
