When a rock might be a snail

My son shouted excitedly to me this morning, “I found a baby snail!” as he pointed to something that looked to me like a very small rock in a puddle. I looked at it. It looked like a rock. I told him it was a rock. He insisted that it was a baby snail.

So I took a closer look. I picked it up. It was smaller than most small things. I thought it was smaller than a baby snail would be but it occurred to me that I’ve never seen a baby snail. So I looked at it again. Real close. And saw this:

A baby snail. Old eagle eyes was right. It was a baby snail.

That’s the lesson I learned again today. When there’s a disagreement, take a closer look at the subject of your disagreement. Because you’re not the only one who thinks that they’re right. And because you might be the one who’s wrong.
