The day is long, the baguette is not

Fresh baguettes are always good on the day they are baked. I try to buy ones that will be okay the next day too, in case I don’t finish it all on the first day. Yesterday, I was eating a day-old baguette. I made a sandwich with part of it for lunch and it was still good, especially when I toasted it.

By dinnertime, it was noticeably harder and worse. This was a bit of a surprise to me because I had been thinking at lunchtime that, “This brand of baguette is good on Day 2.”

But a day is longer than I thought. And maybe it’s longer than you think. The day is long enough for things to change.

Things could get worse.

Things could get better.

You could have long enough to do something about it.

And I’m not just talking about eating a sandwich.
