Forget everything

My car is in the shop and I was trying to figure out if the previous owner had the timing belt changed at the 90,000 mile tuneup because my mechanic was asking me and I didn’t know. I had a copy of a quote from the shop that may have done the 90,000 mile tuneup but it wasn’t clear what they did exactly. I called them and we were talking for a while and then the shop worker asked me, “When would this have been done?” I said 7-10 years ago and he said, “Well, we only keep the records of the past year.”

Rather than be disappointed, I was refreshed. A year is a long time. Their policy seemed reasonable. The IRS doesn’t ever go back any further than seven years to audit someone. Meanwhile, I can still remember girls who didn’t want to go out with me over 20 years ago.

What if, when it made sense, we just forgot everything?

After 90 days, after 6 months, after 1 year, at some point, surely, it makes sense to forget everything and start afresh. It’s been too long.
