Do it yourself

I go to farmers markets. I buy organic strawberries at the supermarket. But the best strawberries I’ve ever had, by far, were the strawberries we grew in my backyard growing up. Deep red and sweet as summer.

In the last place I lived, there was a Meyer lemon tree in the backyard. Meyer lemons are also delicious but the main thing with Meyer lemons is that they don’t travel well because of their softer peel, so you rarely see them for sale in stores. But they’re in people’s backyards.

I roasted some almonds once that blew my roommate’s mind and he asked me, “How did you make these?” I answered, “I just roasted them.” He didn’t quite believe me. “Why don’t the roasted almonds at the store taste like this?”

Things taste better when you do them yourself.
