Confusion is a long time

One second is a long time when you don’t know what’s going on. We are weaning our daughter from her mother’s milk because she’s starting to get a cavity. She doesn’t understand what we’re doing. She just wants her mother’s milk and knows that she’s not getting it. She doesn’t know why. One second is a long time to not know what’s going on. It’s also a long time to hear a top-of-her-lungs scream.

When I first started surfing, being held down by a wave felt scary and seemed to last a really long time. Now that I know what’s happening, it’s uncomfortable being held down by a wave, but it’s not as scary, and it doesn’t seem like such a long time, even though it’s still the same amount of time.

I wish I could tell her what’s going on.
